Look, I believe in sensitivity and tact and agree that all of the things listed above are in and of themselves deplorable, but humor is a means of processing and understanding the world, of rendering life as absurd even at its worst. Some of the best jokes I’ve ever heard used some of the subjects above. For centuries humorists gave given the world some of the best, most insightful material by discussing things that were considered impossible to make jokes about. Yes, when people who are ignorant and unfunny try to make jokes about the horrible parts of our life and culture (I’m looking at you, Daniel Tosh), it’s offensive and disgusting, but to say that these things are somehow off limits is to completely ignore why we as humans need humor.
